US OPEN TENNIS 2011 & 2012

For some of you who know us personally, you know how much we enjoy tennis, both playing & watching.  In our minds there is no better place to watch a game of tennis than in Flushing Meadows, Queens each year at the US Open.  It has quickly become a yearly tradition since our first visit four years ago and last year we had the opportunity to share that with family.  We are finally getting around to sharing some of our US Open pictures from over the past 2 years with you.  We are hoping to get back this year if it all works out, so we are already looking forward to it. Enjoy some of our favorites!

Our new ride…..haha…we would never cheat on our friends at BMW.

Someone is EX-CITED!!

Family picture time…

It was great to see one of our favorite players, Andy Murray, play and win his match.  Made for some great pics.

That guy could rest a meal on his belly….and the lady on the right apparently is not that interested in the match.

Venus & Serena‘s Dad – Smile for the camera…

Serena’s famous split in her singles match and the Williams sisters after their doubles win.  (Wishful thinking, but we want to play them one day.)

Mister animated himself…John Mcenroe.

ESPN anchor Hannah Storm….

The up and coming Ms. Sloane.  Watch out for her, this girl is good.

We are just waiting for Caroline Wozniacki to have another breakout performance at the Open…

Mr Federer…the man who has dominated this sport for the past almost 10 years, winning a record 17 Grand Slam Titles while setting countless other records along the way…. (secretly though we are Nadal fans).

We got a chance to witness Kim Clijsters play in her last tennis match before officially retiring and calling it quits.  ***Check out the video below***

And it was all over until later this year…(hopefully)…but not before Tiffany got her big pink tennis ball. “I love it – signatures coming soon”.

IMAGING USA 2013 IN ATLANTA : WE FINALLY MADE IT

So we finally got a chance to make it to one of the big annual Photography conventions we’ve been dying to get to these past couple of years.  Once we heard that Imaging USA 2013 was going to be in one of our favorite cities this year (Atlanta), it was a must that we book the tickets to make sure we were definitely in attendance.  Imaging USA is an annual convention held in various large cities across the country where thousands of photographers from every background imaginable come together for three to six days of classes, workshops, exhibits, networking, and the like.  In fact their own website describes it as such: “the largest annual convention and expo organized by pro photographers, for pro photographers! Thousands attend from around the world for a level of learning and networking you just can’t find elsewhere.”

Classes are held by some of the biggest and most creative photographers in the business.  After the very first day, we immediately knew if we had to go home that day, we had more than got our money’s worth, and had taken in enough information to last us for quite some time.

Tiffany was quick to point out that we were now “official” since we had our official name badges!

Once the morning classes, (which started at 8 a.m.) were complete on the first day, the expo floor opened and it was amazing to see so many people under one roof ready to set their eyes on some of the latest and best tools in the industry.

Ok…..so this is when we turned into little stalkers.  The gentleman on the left below is Mr. Denis Reggie, the wedding photography that is known to be the “father” of the ever popular photojournalism style.  This little blog is not capable of describing just how much this man has affected the photography business over the years.  Lets just say he has been interviewed by names such as Oprah, Katie Couric, etc….his clients include Mariah Carey, Vera Wang, Rudy Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.  The gentleman/photographer on the right is Mr. Scott Kelby, and chances are if you have every picked up a book on Photoshop, Lightroom, etc, this man probably had something to do with it…in fact early on we purchased a number of his great publications, which we still refer to from time to time.  Now we enjoy just reading about his journey in the business by stopping by his blog a couple of times a week, it is a source of great info.

Checking out some hot new wedding albums designs and……..multitasking using both of our iPad’s.

At the end of the first official night we attended the big welcome party and had a blast, especially after taking advantage of the 2 complimentary drinks provided :)  Funny thing is the welcome party was full of music and food, but once you put a couple of models on stage with a bunch of photographers in the room, it did not take long for us to begin randomly shooting.  Can you spot Tiffany in the picture just below???

Some of our fellow photog friends we met while sitting at one of the tables during the party.

Now we have come to Joe…thats right we will just call him Joe, that is the only name needed for Mr. Joe Buissink who you see pictured below.  In case you are wondering who Joe is, just take a quick peek over at his website and you will quickly see that Joe is an industry giant.  He has photographed the weddings of names such as Stacey Dash, Christina Aguilera, LeAnn Rimmes, Christina Applegate, Jennifer Lopez, Keisha Cole, should we continue…..we think you get the point.

We had the opportunity to attend a class Joe was speaking at one morning, and to say that it was a huge boost & motivator to us in our business is an understatement.  Among the many things that Joe shared with us is the extremely personal, yet public knowledge that both of Joe’s boys have been diagnosed with autism and how that is something he has embraced and become a spokesman for.  His oldest son (pictured) does not normally travel with him but for the first time he was with Joe and to our surprise sitting right in the audience.  As if that wasn’t a touching moment, he then mentioned that the mother of his children, pictured on the screen to the far left, very recently passed away.  It was this tender moment that he captured of her nursing their son, that inspired him to drop out of school in pursuit of his PhD in psychology while in his mid 40′s and turn his attention to documenting people’s lives.  Boy are we sure glad he didn’t waste all that talent on psychology.  By the time Joe finished his class I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the room (including Tiffany’s).

We almost chickened out but decided to wait in line to be able to get a picture with Joe.  Joe is not only a great photographer, but after having multiple opportunities to speak with him, we could tell he is an all around genuinely nice guy who loves people.

Since we were feeling brave now, we decided to get a picture with some other familiar faces that we recognized.  On the left is half of the husband & wife trio of Dave & Quin based out of Toronto, Canada.  The gentleman on the right is Jerry Ghionis who’s class we had a chance to attend on the very first day of the conference and boy did we walk away with a lot of insight.  Jerry has photographed weddings for couples all over the world, literally, and has probably won just about every photography award imaginable over his 17+ year career.  He did an onstage live shoot inside of a packed auditorium and made it look easy.  We love you Jerry!

These last couple of shots sort of sums up all of the personalities that were under one roof.  As Tiffany and I were about to walk outside for a few minutes, the girl on the right yoked me (Bernard) up and asked if I could take a picture of the group with her camera.  Of course I took the picture, but then the guy you see taking the picture below, hopped out of the picture and told me to get in, so Tiffany being quick on the draw took a picture of what was going on.

Then the guy taking the picture tells me to go ahead and wrap my arm around the lady on my left and said it’s ok, “the baby she is pregnant with is not your”…..of which everyone got a kick out of it and the result is the picture you see.

This is a random picture we took right before getting into an elevator across from the Georgia World Conference Center where Imaging USA was held, we know its random but we liked it.  We must say that we thoroughly enjoyed our trip and cannot believe it took us so long to get there.  Next years Imaging 2014 will be in Phoenix so stay tuned, although our next big photo trip will be WPPI in Vegas.  Until then…….

RECENT VISIT TO ARIZONA

Recently I (Bernard) had a chance to travel to Tempe, Arizona on business for about a week.  While I didn’t get a chance to take a whole lot of pictures, we decided to share a few of the ones that I did take.  For those that have never been, Tempe is a local suburb of Phoenix that is mostly populated by those that attend or work at Arizona State University which has a student body of about 58,000, definitely a college town.  The population of Tempe is about 175,000 residents and it covers about 40 square miles.  It is bordered by Phoenix on the west, Scottsdale to the north, with an average summer time temperature of 103 degrees, yikes!  There are 44 hotels and motels in Tempe with a combined 5,330 rooms and since Tiffany did not get a chance to accompany me on the trip she is determined to get to one of those resorts in Scottsdale to enjoy the world renowned Spa treatments.

This is the hotel I stayed at, called the Tempe Mission Palms.

The mountain just behind the hotel.

This was one of the coolest things I saw while there.  Apparently orange trees grow there naturally but what I learned is that the oranges themselves are not really edible since the trees have not been genetically altered to produce good fruit….sounds kinda backwards if you ask me.

undefined

This is my boy Jacob Tyler Lucas…..just kidding, I don’t actually know him but his music sounded good.

This was an absolutely gorgeous site to take in, the picture still doesn’t do it much justice.

ROYS RESTAURANT & CANON 85MM F1.2

A fews months back when we traveled down to Baltimore to shoot Jen & Brian’s wedding, we took the opportunity the night before to go to what is currently our FAVORITE restaurant, Roy’s.  Roy’s is a Hawaiian Fusion restaurant that  is a sheer delight from appetizer to dessert and everything in between.  If you can remember from our post here, our only problem is that the Roy’s that was here in Philadelphia, closed this past summer, so the next closest one to us is in Baltimore.  Being the opportunist that we are, we got in town early enough the night before to check into our hotel and then enjoy ourselves…..

Another thing to mention (for you photo nerds), was that for the wedding, we rented a Canon 85mm f1.2 lens that we read so much about.  We played with it a little, wondering how and when we could fit it in to our business plan, since it commands a pretty hefty price tag.  This lens is insanely sharp and the F1.2 part of it practically allows you to shoot in the dark with no flash…..so thats exactly what we did.  We took our camera & the lens along with us to Roy’s, so each picture in this post was taken with it (except the obvious one below)

Look at how buttery smooth that background is…and what better way to start off our meal than with the famous Hawaiian martini.

This picture was taken with my phone just in case you didn’t believe us that the food is incredible.

Ok….so at the end of the night, the nice waitress offered to take a picture of us with our camera and lets just say she didn’t quite know how to get the camera to focus properly.

Here is a picture of the lens that we have been talking about, you can check it out here on Canon’s website or here on B&H’s website.

And here are 2 example’s from pictures we took the next day, of the awesome images that the Canon 85mm F1.2 is capable of producing.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time you see us shooting around town, you see this lens on our camera.

Happy Thursday!

U.S. OPEN FLUSHING MEADOWS, NEW YORK 2010

As much as we talk about tennis or just how excited we are when we get a chance to get to the US Open we almost feel guilty for not posting any pictures just after our visit a few months back.  But with the fall season being one of the busiest times for us we barely had time to do anything but keep up with our clients.  Since we shot our last wedding of 2010 a few weeks back we managed to carve out a few minutes to share just a few pictures from our last visit.

The US Open is truly a melting pot, and it is amazing how you can meet people from all over the world there, sharing in their love for tennis.  Last year we met the nicest retired older couple, and after talking with them a little while they told us how they were from South Africa and moved their family there about 25 years ago.  For the pass 8 years they make the trip to New York each year to stay a week in Manhattan to take in the Open.  After what was a full week for them they decided that they were not going to stick around for the night match in Arthur Ashe stadium so they gave their tickets to us.  We almost wanted to see if they could adopt us as their other grand children and take us back to South Africa with them : )

This year while we were there having some lunch we shared a table with a couple where we thought the 40yo-ish woman was young enough to be the older guys daughter……until we talked further with them and they told us how they were just married at the Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas earlier that year and how that Sunday after the Open they were going boat/yacht racing with some of their friends…..  They then had the nerve to ask us have we ever been yacht racing???  We wanted to say are you kidding us lady, we almost had to sneak in the back door in order to get in here : )

Anywho…enjoy some of the pics from our not too recent trip.

Ok….this here adult beverage deserves a moment of silence by itself.  We would be remiss if we didn’t say how much of a delight they were :)  Tiffany didn’t too much care for the salad but I thoroughly enjoyed both and will be having the combo again next time around.

Shortly after taking the above picture, the guy next to us offered to take our picture and we must say he didn’t do too bad of a job.

Caroline Wozniacki the #1 ranked women’s tennis player in the world, it is almost unbelievable that she was only born in 1990…..we were kinda bummed that she lost to Kim Clijsters in the Finals.

No Tiffany, I’m not interested in taking a picture, I’m on the phone conducting business right now…

The ever exciting and sometimes crazy Gael Monfils, ranked #12 in the world.

We were so tempted to offer this woman a few of those frozen drinks from above and see if she would let us have use any of her super expensive equipment, that big lens is north of $5K.

We were pretty sure Marietta, Georgia’s own Melanie Oudin was looking right at us.

“What did you say mommy?”…..”Oh I didn’t like that very much”…..”I’m ready to go home now, you don’t like me.”

Some of the damage incurred……and forgive us for spotlighting that delicious drink again.

And what is definitely our favorite shot of the weekend, taken from Arthur Ashe stadium.
